I dare every South Carolinian, of all colors, to watch "To Kill a Mockingbird", and then ask themselves this question:

Who, among the candidates, is Atticus Finch?

My guess is that they would say that John Edwards is the closest thing to Gregory Peck's exemplary character...and they would be proud to know that he is one of their own brothers. As a fellow Carolinian, I know that most Carolinians want to distance themselves from the cruel bigotry of the old South, just as Atticus Finch distanced himself, at great cost to personal comfort and security.

It's really important for progressives to remember the context that the American audience has been conditioned to perceive the illegal wire tap story in.

The Dirty Harry movies, as well as that whole genre of the Lone Good Cop fighting the bureacracy as well as the Bad Guys. Liberals have allowed themselves to be identified with bureaucrats over the years. Reagan was a master at casting liberals as corrupt bureaucrats - remember "Go ahead, make my day." How many cop shows are about how Bad Guys get away because wimpy bureaucrats insist on following this or that "rule?" If Democrats are not careful they come across as sissies.
