You're Gonna Have to Choose

This site is angrier than I've ever seen it. I've lived through "Armando Sucks", through the judicial confirmations, through Brown/Hackett and the Pie Wars. And I don't think it's ever been this bad. This is understandable. Between the war in Iraq, FISA, Abu Ghraib, rising income inequality, wiretapping, a SCOTUS lilting toward the right and 700,000 other issues, there's a lot to be pissed about. And, although I'm not all that mad at Democrats myself, I recognize that there's a lot to be pissed about there as well. The MoveOn vote was unnecessary, no matter how dumb the ad was, attempts to overcome Republican blockading have been ineffective, and FISA passed with plenty of Dem support. So I understand the sentiment. But you've got a choice.
Either find new ways to express it, or find new avenues to enact change.
Mary, Mary quite contrary: defending dissent on DailyKos
Tue Mar 28, 2006 at 08:08:48 PM PDT
Normally I'm not here on Tuesdays. It's my day off and I normally have better things to do. But I have spent all day today arguing with someone on Dkos and it's got me bothered and it's got me thinking. I won't say who and I won't say where (and I'd ask you to please not look it up) because this diary is not about my argument with one blogger. This diary is about how we as a community behave in the face of criticism or differing of opinion. This is about an "us vs them" mentality within the community. This is about making assumptions and punishing people based on those assumptions.
Sickening: Kossacks supporting the Minutemen.
Sun Mar 26, 2006 at 12:38:05 PM PDT
The last few days have been a bizzare experience. I had a feeling I was in Red State or Free Republic at times. First, there was the bizzare diary defending female teachers having sex with 14 year old boys, which got a lot of support. Now, in reaction to the protests against HR 4437, we have people coming forward and defending the Minutemen and their neo-Nazi allies -- and getting cheered on.
I am not going to mention names. You know who you are. But if you are gullible enough to swoon over the Minutemen, the Neo-Nazis, and their "professionalism," then you are being an enabler. You are being an enabler for the worst kind of hate groups there are in this country. And if you don't believe me when I say that the Minutemen and Neo-nazis are allied, you are arguing with the facts, not me.
"Vichy Dems" vs. "Born Again Progressives"
Fri Mar 24, 2006 at 10:01:40 AM PDT
There was a little dustup yesterday on the old blog...
...and I helped stir up some of that dust.
To those who may have taken offense, let me apologize, and that includes Steven D. In a lot of ways, he and I were saying the same thing. I actually appreciate his passion.
But let me try to explain what I think stirred something in me to write what I did, and explain what I think is a phenomenon here that, to me anyway, is somewhat alarming.
Kossacks who inspire us - and why
Fri Mar 24, 2006 at 02:06:41 AM PDT
As I was exercising this morning (a brisk walk in equally brisk early Spring weather), I was reflecting on the most meaningful rewards I get as a teacher. Among these are when I get public recognition as a result of something one of my students does or say. Twice in recent weeks I have received notification of awards -- being included among groups of teachers recognized for their effectiveness and/or inspiration as the result of being nominated by a student. One of these was from a current student, the other from one now a sophomore in college. In neither case had I known how much of a positive effect I had had.
So that leads to the purpose of this diary. I will, below the fold, explain what I hope will happen. For this to work, people will each have to follow the examples I will (as a good teacher) model for them. They will also probably have to recommend the diary to keep it visible for others to participate. In requesting recommends, it is because I believe this is at least as valuable as our recent roll-calls of participants.

There was this show you see, where the characters whined constantly. And they never grew, they never changed, but were simply fascinated by the minutia of their own existence. Can you guess where this heads?
teacherken on education - an annotated and cumulative list
Sat Mar 04, 2006 at 05:56:45 PM PDT
I don't really expect this to get much action. It is a metadiary on education, yet another cumulative annotated list of my diary postings here at dailykos on education and related subjects. I do one of these every few months as a service. As I am now often communiating with candidates for office about education policy, in fairness they ought to be able to easily see how half-baked I really am. And for those interested in the subject, if they see this diary (which if they subscribe they will) they can simply bookmark it.
If anyone thinks on a Saturday night that this diary is worthy of recommends or comments, I will be appreciative. I do akcnowledge feeling good when others value what I offer this community. But the choice of how to react is not mine, but belongs to you, the readers.
Is it ok for campaigns to ask for donations while Yearly Kos is fundraising?
Tue Feb 28, 2006 at 06:43:11 PM PDT
Names and details have been changed to protect the innocent.
I have a question from you all. Is Daily Kos a country club, or are we a force for change? Kos has made his position clear.
This is a Democratic blog, a partisan blog. One that recognizes that Democrats run from left to right on the ideological spectrum, and yet we're all still in this fight together.

POLL: How long have you been looking at DailyKos?
Sat Feb 18, 2006 at 02:25:37 PM PDT
Well, it has been an entire month since I asked y'all how long you've been looking at DailyKos. That's right, my original survey was back on January 17. It seems so long ago. I was rather surprised by the results: nearly three quarters of you who bothered to submit to the pain of polling have been looking at DailyKos for a year or more (73 percent of 385 respondents, to be exact). Fifteen percent have been looking for about a year but more than two months. And only three percent had been looking at DailyKos for just the past two months or less. Frankly, I had thought the percentage of newbies would have been slightly higher. But, when you consider that three percent in two months is roughly an annual growth rate of just under 16 percent, that's actually not too bad. Still, I would feel a lot better if there were evidence of a massive shift in the political tectonic plates--evidence such as DailyKos attracting a five to ten percent increase in fresh eyeballs every couple months.
The original poll is available here: DailyKos Poll 01/17/06
Now the skip ....

DailyKos Fiddles while America Burns so I don't know exactly if the matter was fully put to rest, but here's my take, both as an insider (active on the site for a bit of time now) and an outsider (as a non-American, physically on another continent, and a regular follower of the press in other countries, including the international financial press).
I have mostly good news.
Like a Slow, Spinning Redemption

Today, I want to speak to you of pain.
I want to speak to you of loneliness, and sorrow, and the bitter anger from being trapped in an uncontrollable nightmare.
I want to teach you of the joy that comes of despair, and the special kind of hope that can only come when all hope has died.
Mostly, I want to blame Hunter, MsOC, and, God help me, John Kerry for making me do this.
Find out what the hell I'm talking about below the fold.

Breaking News: Scoles drops out; Sestak to run
Wed Feb 01, 2006 at 04:08:12 PM PDT
This is my district (PA-07). Paul Scoles was being challenged for the right to run against Curt Weldon by a young Fighting Dem--former Republican--Bryan Lentz. Paul is now dropping out and endorsing Vice Admiral (ret.) Joe Sestak who has just thrown his hat into the ring.
I'm not sure what to make of this yet. I just got it in my inbox.
Not to pick on Maria specifically--her post was just the latest such instance I've come across, the proverbial straw--but I'm not sure what to make of it either. Plea below the fold...
Taken to Task...Seems Like dKos Works...
Wed Feb 01, 2006 at 01:32:22 AM PDT
In the last coupla days, Mary Scott O'Connor and mcjoan have written diaries/front-page posts that received alotta response. Alotta that response has been in direct opposition, including response-diaries that have also been rec-listed. That opposition that has been well-described and comes from numerous directions and expresses a variety of perspectives. And by-in-large, most of the comments have been more-or-less civil.
And actually, this sorta thing happens fairly frequently here at dKos.
When front-page or rec-list figures are taken to task for their comments, when alotta folks step-up and clarify issues...well, to me, this seems like dKos is "working" in a fairly effective fashion. At least for dialog and awareness.
...I suppose I could have posted this in one of those threads or the response-threads, but I'd like to acknowledge it in a broader sense, ya know?...
BREAKING - HOLY SHIT - Sandra Day O'Conner RESIGNS
Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 08:24:11 PM PDT
I didn't see this one coming - HOLY FUCKING SHIT ON A STICK! What is she fucking thinking, she knows that douche bag is going to probably appoint his mother to replace her.
Well at least it's a chance for a black person or another woman on the bench.
OH SHIT - THIS JUST IN - I heard Rhenquist isn't looking so good either!!!
Now what the fuck are we going to do now?
I just hope we don't fucking lose this battle and then spend the whole fucking night posting useless fucking diaries on KOS blaming one another for another classic minority party clusterfuck.
But I am sure that's not going to happen.
Time to Get Up Off the Mat
Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 02:33:48 PM PDT
We lost this one. Not really a surprise, but certainly a grave disappointment. Whether because of poor tactics, the impossibility of being a minority, lack of conviction, fear, or traitor Dems, Samuel Alito will be on the Supreme Court.
We lost, and we got knocked down.
It's time to get up off the mat.
